From the Principal

Our Motto: Friendly Respectful Courageous Learning

Our Commitment: With courage we learn, connecting to people and place. Striving for excellence by being curious, creative and resilient.

Highlights

1. Swansea Primary School’s musical production of the Lion King

Last Wednesday our school watched the Lion King musical at Swansea Community Hall  involving all students from Swansea Primary School. Our students were delighted to watch the musical which had all age groups performing. The acting, singing, costumes, stage set and overall performance was outstanding and to see all of our students quiet and thoroughly enjoying the whole performance right through to the finale scene was a true reflection of the quality of the musical. Well done Swansea Primary School!

2. KEON

It was wonderful to see our new Minister for the Environment Ruby Sparshott presenting to our KEON students around what being a Wilds’cool is and the projects we are focussing on this term i.e. the shorebirds fence protection at Redbill Beach, our penguin research, school rubbish recycling and keeping our beaches clean. For more information please refer to KEON’s report in this newsletter.

3. PAT Assessments

Congratulations to all our students who completed the online reading, spelling and numeracy PAT assessments. All students did their best and we look forward to celebrating what our students are doing well in and also identifying areas where we need to focus our teaching

4. Permaculture Workshop

The permaculture workshop held at our school last Friday was a great success with over 40 people in attendance. Many thanks to the Bicheno Food and Wine Festival committee for organising this event. Everyone learnt new information on different types of composting and also the important what to do and what to avoid when composting. Thanks to Matt and Anton for enabling this to occur at our school!

5. Student Leaders involvement in the Bicheno Food and Wine Festival 16 November

Notes have gone home with student leaders in the Grade 3 – 6 classes. With the festival looming and tickets sold there are 20 spaces for student volunteers from St Mary’s District School and Bicheno Primary School.

6. muka layna Collaboration (Salt Water Fresh Water Schools)

Our muka layna Collaboration continues to grow with a clear focus on collaboration across our 5 schools. The PL day last Friday focussed on developing Lesson Templates which all our schools will use in 2020. All schools have completed PAT data assessments which will form the benchmark so we can measure our impact on student learning over time and also learn from each other what is working, how we can share our planning, and how we can all use high impact strategies to maximise student learning.

Have a great week everyone!

Grade 3/4

English:

We are learning to use the strategy of predicting to help us to understand a text.

We are learning to work with a group of people to deepen our understanding of a text.

We are learning use descriptive language effectively to build a character.

Maths:

We are learning to measure the temperature with a thermometer using degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit.

We are exploring the concept of probability and likelihood of particular events occurring.

Grade 5/6:

In English

Spelling – we have been looking at root words and their derivations. [press/pressure/impress/ depression][act/actor/action]

we have been investigating words with the suffix “ful”; making generalisations to formulate rules.

Vocabulary – we have been learning about noun groups so that we can provide greater detail in our descriptive writing.

Writing – working on our independent writing projects; revisiting and editing previous projects to make improvements in our work by applying what we have learnt in our vocabulary lessons.

Reading – the class is enjoying the exciting final chapters of our Class Novel; Holes by Louis Sachar

Students have been revisiting their predictions on the last chapter of the novel and making adjustments in response to the events of the story as they unfold

In Maths

We have been learning to use long and short division to solve increasingly challenging problems.

We have revisited algorithms for solving multiplication problems and are learning to use the Lattice method for solving problems involving three, four and five digit numbers

In HASS

we have been learning about the social conditions, and the changes in the rights of Australians throughout the 20th century.

The division of the classes; Upper, Middle and Working

The difference in social conditions for each of the classes; for example: health, housing, working conditions and education.

In Science

We have begun our unit on Marvellous Microbes. We have looked at different types of bread and made observations on their appearance, texture, taste, smell etc. We have then looked at their ingredients to look for similarities and difference and draw conclusions on why each type of bread is different.

Indonesian

Kinder are beginning to explore App 7 on the ELLA program. It has a focus on the language of shapes.

In prep/1 and 1/2 We are learning the shape nouns and related adjectives. For example we are learning how to say ‘Big, red, square’ segi empat besar dan merah.

In 3/4 and 5/6 we are focusing on identifying ‘key words’, kata kunci, when listening to or reading Indonesian. The key words can help us understand what the text might be about without understanding every word.

KEON

In our first meeting for back in term 4, we welcomed guest speakers Ruby as Bicheno Primary School’s Environmental Minister for Wildsc’ool, Coco and Isla representing Lids for Kids, and Nina updating on KEON’s involvement in the Bicheno Food and Wine Festival.

Ruby explained how Bicheno’s Wildsc’ool will be involved in monitoring evidence of Shorebird nesting. They will work with Parks and Wildlife to make posters and assist in putting up fenced areas on Redbill to protect them from dogs. They have observed signs at Douglas Apsley and other areas as a guide.

Coco and Isla then spoke about Lids for Kids. They are collecting lids to be made into prosthetic limbs for kids. They are taking any plastic lids, bread clips, or other hard plastic object. The collection point is in their 5/6 classroom, so please put your small hard plastics aside for this good cause! After the meeting Coco approached Leon in I Sea Scoops to ask if that can be a central location for community donations. Leon offered a place in the Makers garden where he and Little Bay will also make contributions for pick-up.

Nina described where the KEON tent will be at the BFWF (next to the tennis court), with the waste whale hanging in the tree and lid decorations and display photos, drawings and messages displayed, along with Keon members (with POKEON) to discuss ‘picking up rubbish and helping to save the world’.

We reflected on the 2040 movie, with the need for coal burning to be replaced with renewables for power, for cars to become electric, and then discussed how a surprising source of greenhouse gas is from food scraps going to the tip instead of composts. Coco described how at her old school they had a big ‘hot’ compost, which is what EON’s Alison and Leon are going to have on their block – with all food scraps and bio-cups from the BFWF.

As part of good news/bad news Keon, we talked about how Sydney city is switching to solar and wind power for their pool, library and other public buildings, but how the Amazon has been on fire to make cattle fields, and then a great idea blossomed of cars with filters that absorbed greenhouse gases.
