Highlights

On Wednesday 11 September we commence our five day Swimming and Water Safety Program for our Grade 3 to 6 students at the St Mary’s District School swimming pool. As our students spend time in many water related activities outside of school hours this is a crucial safety and wellbeing program for our school. Could all parents please ensure students are prepared and have the right clothing, goggles if required, towels etc. every day, as the buses leave promptly each day.

Last Thursday we were very fortunate to have Hon Jane Howlett MLC visit our school. As our Grade 5/6 students were involved in a successful tabloid sports day at Swansea Primary School four of our Grade 3/4 students stepped up into leadership roles. Well done to Finn, Molly, Milly and Robert for showing Jane Howlett around our amazing school and explaining our school values. She was delighted with our teaching and learning areas, our grounds, our programs and of course our friendly and respectful students and staff. She has also kindly offered to show our students around parliament the next time we are visiting Hobart.

Our 2019 NAPLAN results are now available and parents of Grade 3 and Grade 5 students will be receiving Individual Student Reports and a Frequently Asked Questions information sheet. I am very happy with our students’ performance demonstrating some very high individual achievements and also identifying areas where we can improve our teaching and learning programs. There will be an accompanying letter to parents/guardians also. These testing outcomes will help inform our 2020 School Improvement Plan and also the focus of our explicit teaching. In the next newsletter we will share aspects of the NAPLAN data sets with our school community.

School Satisfaction Surveys

Thanks everyone who participated in our 2019 School Satisfaction Survey. We look forward to receiving this important feedback on what our school does well and also where we can improve our performance.

All of our Grade 4 to 6 students completed the Wellbeing Survey this year for the first time and we look forward to using this information to improve our student safety and wellbeing and look at effective strategies for our 2020 School Improvement Plan.

School Attendance and Punctuality

Just a reminder to all that school attendance is crucial to student learning. It is really important that every child attends every day. As we have 8 weeks of student holidays, if possible family holidays should be scheduled during school holidays. Punctuality is also important as many of our key explicit teaching occurs in the morning session each day.

School Logo school community voting

Just a reminder that our school community voting for our preferred school logo closes this week. We will keep everyone informed of the progress. As soon as we finalise this process we give the go ahead to our new 2020 school uniforms and re-image our stationary, values posters, and signage around the school.

Finally, it was wonderful to see the welcome rainfall for our East Coast farmers, vineyards, and for those off the water grid, a welcome top up to those with rainwater tanks.

Enjoy the spring and all it has to offer!

Best regards
Rob Presswell

In English we are continuing to explore differences in our words and developing an understanding of verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs and pro-nouns. We will finish this term exploring Articles, Lower Primary children need practice using the articles the, a and an appropriately.

Articles can be either definite or indefinite. For example (a) The is the definite article. It is definite because it is referring to a specific thing.

Examples: The man who lives next door. The dog is outside. (b) A and an are indefinite. Rather than referring to a specific thing, they refer to anyone of a group of things. Examples: A man lives next door. A dog is outside. An is used instead of a in front of words that begin with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u). Examples: an apple an egg an igloo an orange an umbrella an hour but a hotel.

Theatrical Reviews of Matilda the Musical

Last month Grade 5/6 were very fortunate to attend Launceston College’s performance of Matilda the Musical.

This was a fabulous experience and; for some, their first time in a theatre for a live production. There was quite a bit of excitement leading up to our trip and the college did not disappoint with most students giving it a 10\10.

Following our excursion we learnt about the Review text type; it’s purpose, and structural and language features. Students learnt that a review is not a recount of the story but rather a subjective opinion piece that either encourages or discourages others to get a long and see the production, providing specifics as to what worked well and what didn’t. Grade 5/6 then wrote reviews that gave their opinion of Matilda the Musical.

Matilda the Musical Review By Byron Ball

On the 21st of August 2019 I had the pleasure of going to Roald Dahls Matilda the Musical performed by Launceston College.

It was about a kid with superpowers who was always teased and bullied. I am someone who doesn’t like musicals but I had found it pretty intriguing.

The cast did a terrific job of acting and they also had expressive and clear facial expressions. The actor who played the role of Matilda was named Lauren Colson; she did an excellent job.

I think the play had a strong story line if you really listen to the music and words. The lighting played a strong part in most scenes. One example of this was when Bruce Bogtrotter belched and they used green lighting and smoke. The lighting and sound was used effectively in special parts of the musical.

I would recommend this play to people who are aged from 6-100 years old and people who have watched the movie or read the book. I really enjoyed the musical.

3.5 stars

Launceston College performs Roald Dahl’s Matilda the musical

Have you ever experienced a musical like Matilda? Presented by Launceston College, Matilda the Musical was an amazing rendition of Roald Dahl’s book that is still read today. Come out and have a great musical experience.

Matilda is a small, intelligent young girl but all her family will not tolerate her smartness or even her, except for her teacher; Miss Honey. She thinks that Matilda is an extraordinary child. One of the main characters, Miss Trunchbull; the villain of the story, is a bully that Matilda stands up to.

The performance was dazzling with Matilda played perfectly by Lauren Colson. Miss Trunchbull was played beautifully by Lachlan Hindrum and all the other performers were amazing. Two characters, Mr Wormwood played by Luca Schild and Michael Wormwood played by Jordon Moss, I loved how they got the audience involved.

The set was incredible. There were swings, a couch and other amazing props. The lighting was extraordinary, especially when they used the smoke machine, they used the lights to make a scene more dramatic.

I thought the play was outstanding, I strongly recommend this performance to those who likes music but suggest you watch the movie or read the book first.

I rate it: 3.5 stars

2019 Matilda the musical by Launceston collage.

The Matilda had very good singing and acting but it was a little bit hard to follow especially if you haven’t read the book or watched the movie if you not familiar with the story you will find it a bit boring and slow.

The musical starts with the little kids talking about their parents love them saying ‘’ my mummy says I’m a miracle and ‘’my daddy says I’m a special little guy’’ then the scene changed to the hospital were Matilda is born but her parents wanted as boy not a girl so her parents were ungrateful to have matilda.

The costumes were simple but effective the performance of the main character Matilda made me feel like they over acted as there was a little too much singing and not enough descriptive language and when there was and sometimes when they were talking it was very mumbley. The costumes were cool and a little plain the costumes were made by Jaylene Allen.

The play was directed by Cheyne Mitchell. The producer Elizebeth Bennet the music and lyrics are by Tim Mitchene each actor has part some are small part and some are big parts,

Matilda wormwood was played by Lauren Colson. Matilda is definitely one of the main characters of the musical, Lauren Colson did a very good job, as you could see what Matilda was feeling by her acting and part singing.

Michel wormwood was played by Jordan moss, Jordan moss had a small part in the musical but it was also important and funny parts. I think Jordan moss did an amazing job to make them musical a little more entertaining.

Lavender is played by charlotte Edwards. Lavender is a little girl who wants to be friends with Matilda the popular girl. Charlotte Edwards did a spectacular job as acting like a little girl.

I have never seen this musical before and I expected a little bit more conversation. I do know it is a musical and there is meant to be singing but there was a little to mush singing, I found the musical disappointing and slow.

I recommend the musical to someone that has read the book or watched the movie.

Matilda the Musical

Recently I got to see one of Dennis Kelly’s productions; Matilda the musical at the Princess Theatre in Launceston. It was beautifully performed by Launceston College. When I first walked in, the stage looked really small but when they opened it was huge.

The musical started out with every one singing a song, then it moved on to Miss Wormwood giving birth to Matilda Wormwood. Her father wanted a boy so he called Matilda a boy and Matilda had to constantly say “I’m a girl”. Matilda got bullied by her family and they didn’t respect her special abilities, Matilda also got bullied by the very violent and brutal principal; Miss Trunchball.

Each actor was outstanding but the one that really stood out to me was Matilda Wormwood played by Lauren Colson, she was amazing. She was in time throughout the whole performance and sang really well too. No actor was off focus during the scene changes.

The director; Cheyne Mitchell has done a really good job. He has put together an amazing show. The scene changes were really well done, they weren’t making any loud distractions, and they were done really quickly and smoothly. The lighting played its own roles in certain parts throughout the production. The lighting was really important at one bit when Bruce Bogtrotter burped and the lights showed the stink really well.

I strongly encourage everyone to get along to see this musical. I found myself smiling throughout the whole production. It was really well done. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was also funny. I guarantee that you will love it as much as I did.

Overall I rate it 4 and a half out 5.

The Amazing Matilda

On Wednesday the 21st of august I had the pleasure of seeing Matilda the Musical, performed by Launceston College at the Princess Theatre.

The set design was fabulous and the props really helped in setting the scene. The music also really set the mood for the audience.

At the beginning Matilda (Lauren Colson) is always being told by her parents (Mr Wormwood- Luca Schild and Mrs Wormwood-Georgia Woodland) to stop doing what she loves most, reading. Then we go to the school and meet Miss Trunchball (Lachlan Hindrum) and Miss Honey (Elise Kolka). Matilda is feeling very left out at school because all of the children are talking about their loving families, Matilda tries to cover up her non-loving family by telling everyone her family is great.

Director, Cheyne Mitchell, did an amazing job in really capturing the scene of Roald Dahl’s original book. The scene changes were really smooth and all the costumes looked great.

I encourage you to go and see this outstanding and magical production.

The Amazing Matilda

On the 21st of August I got to see Matilda the musical at the Princess Theatre in Launceston, It was performed by the Launceston college students, who were terrific. Playwright Dennis Kelly and director Cheyne Mitchell, both did an outstanding job bringing Roald Dahl’s story to life.

The musical opened with the cast performing and singing Miracle. Matilda growing up as a clever and very smart 5 year old girl, whose family do not respect her at all. Her parents consistently call her a boy, when she is a girl. When she goes to school, she gets bullied by the powerful, scariest principal ever; Miss Trunchball. But there is one person that respects her, her teacher Miss Honey.

All of the actors were outstanding and they all acted very strongly. The actors in the lead roles did a terrific job. Lauren Colson played the main character Matilda. Lauren Colson did a very powerful job of making every little expression really noticeable and enjoyable.

The director Cheyne Michael has done a remarkable job. All of the elements tied in with the performance. The sets and props were very simple but still effective. The scene changes ran very smoothly and were really well connected. The lighting played its own role because it looked very real in some parts of the show, especially when Bruce Bogtrotter burped. It gave the audience a real sense of what the burp was really like. I really liked the costumes because they were really well designed and colourful.

I strongly recommend this musical to anybody, no matter what age. I thoroughly enjoyed it all the way through the show. The Launceston College did an amazing job, so go and see it now.

I rate it 4.5 stars

The Great Matilda

Last week on the 21st of August around 6 schools from the Launceston area and Bicheno went to see Matilda the Musical. It was fun and exciting with lots of singing. The show didn’t really introduce the characters but somehow you got to know them really well. Matilda (Lauren Colson) is more of a quite character but her best friend Lavender (Charlotte Edwards) is a loud and confident character.

Matilda is a five year old girl. She has a horrible family that doesn’t care about her at all. Matilda goes to school and finds herself facing a bully at school and home.

Georgia woodland played Mrs Wormwood she was hilarious and great at staying in character. Lachlan Hindrum played Miss Truchbull, he was outstanding in every scene and played a really big part.

The set up was out standing in the way they showed everyone on stage at the same time. Malcolm Butters did exceptionally well with the lighting effects. In one scene when Bruce Bogtrotter ate the cake and burped, the lighting was effective way in show the burp.

I’ve watched the movie and the musical and by far the musical was my favourite way to present the story of Matilda. I recommend this musical for all ages, from Grade 1 to 12. I give this performance a 4.5 out of 5.

Matilda the Musical Hits the High Notes!

Come on out and support Launceston College performing Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical from the 21st to the 23rd of August at The Princess Theatre. It’s fun from beginning to end, and you’ll see just how talented Launceston College is.

The show starts with the school year beginning and all the kids in Matilda’s class are talking about their loving families but Matilda is just sitting in the corner moping.

The outstanding lead actress; Lauren Colson who was playing Matilda Wormwood, had in my opinion the strongest voice.

The costumes designed by, Gaylene Allen and Anthony Phillips, are amazing with all their colour and imagination. The set design by Fayth Dury and Lace Murphie, is so simple but so affective to the play. The director Denis Kelly was great, and everyone knows what to do and when to do it.

I’ve seen Matilda the movie and read the book so it was much easier to follow. Matilda has always been one of my favourite Roald Dahl classics. I found myself smiling throughout the performance. I highly recommend going to see Launceston College perform. I rate

THE MATILDA REVIEW BY CONNOR BALDWIN

On the 21st of August around 6 schools and my class went to see a play. The play was Matilda performed by Launceston College at the Princess Theatre in Launceston.

The play started at 11:00am. The play started at a birthday party, then at a hospital where Matilda was born. The scene then went to Matilda’s house and her Dad called her boy. The main idea of the play is that kids can do anything they put their mind to.

The scene on Matilda’s first day of school is the older kids telling Matilda and her friends about Miss Trunchbull the mean principal. There was a lot of singing and dancing. One of the actors who was the Russian guy, was out of sync occasionally. The performance was great.

I thought the set and the costumes were average, however I really appreciated the lighting. The lighting was the best element of the whole production.

Overall I would recommend this musical to people who enjoy plays and for people that want to have fun. I rate this musical four and a half stars.

Magnificent Matilda.

On the 21st of August, I got to enjoy Matilda the Musical performed by Launceston College.

The show started with a wonderful song to engage the audience, then the show began. It all started when Matilda Wormwood; played by Lauren Colson was born, disappointing her family who wanted a boy. Over time Matilda got bullied by her family about reading books instead of watching TV, and judging her family for wanting to lie to people for money. Her family especially didn’t like her intelligence.

The costumes were outstanding, from the dark, sad and miserable uniform of Matilda’s school to the bright, happy over the top outfits of ballroom dancer Mrs Wormwood and typical circus costumes of the ensemble.

The performance was directed by Cheyne Mitchell. The direction was perfect. The main character Matilda Wormwood who was played by Lauren Colson was perfect sometimes I would think she is a kid. Mrs Wormwood played by Georgia Woodland did mumble a bit but otherwise it was fantastic.

I definitely would recommended this production. The play is funny and no matter what age you are, you should enjoy it, but I would recommended reading the book or watching the movie to understand the plot better.

Review of Matilda the Musical

On Wednesday the Grade 5/6 class of Bicheno Primary School went to see the Musical Matilda; performed by Launceston College at the Princess theatre. At the theatre there was about eight schools all outside inline to go in the theatre to watch the Musical.

The show starts out with Matilda’s mum giving birth to the main character Matilda. It soon went on to a song about miracles and then they made a scene that showed us everyone in Matilda’s family, her mum, dad and her brother Michael. They go on to show you how much Matilda isn’t valued in her family. We then meet her school friends and the evil headmaster; Mrs Trunchbull.

The actors where great and I could tell they were really into it, all of the cast leads: Lauren Colson as Matilda Wormwood, Luca Schild as Mr. Wormwood, Georgia Woodland as Mrs. Wormwood, Jordan Moss as Michael Wormwood, Elise Kolka as Miss Honey and Lachlan Hindrum as Miss Trunchbull, were all outstanding and also played their roles really well but I feel at random times they got a bit too into their roles and just over did it a bit.

I liked the design elements a lot, they didn’t have too many props that would crowd the stage but there was just enough that everyone knew where they were in the story of Matilda. The costumes fit the characters really well and suited their personalities.

The musical was directed by Cheyne Mitchell and it seems like he knew what he was doing, I felt all the songs came up at the right times and I liked how the choreography was really simple.

I would recommend this musical to people in-between the age of 8-16 years old. The play did get a bit boring at times like when they repeat a song or a song goes on for a long time and has the same lyrics repeating over and over.

Over all I thought the play was ok but I wouldn’t go see it again.

Marvellous Matilda

On August the 21st, I was amazed by Launceston College’s role play of Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical in the Launceston Princess Theatre.

We started at a beautiful set with a young girl called Matilda. Although she is smart, her parents hate her. As she starts kinder her beloved teacher, Miss Honey, sees potential in her, but Miss Trunchbull the bully principal keeps a close eye on Matilda. Will Matilda find the guts to stand up for what’s right?

Matilda was played beautifully by Lauren Colson. Although she is portrayed by a teenager, she resembles a 5 year old. Miss Trunchbull was played by Lachlan Hindrum, who did an amazing job portraying the big bully that she is.

The musical was directed by Cheyne Mitchell and was performed very well. All the performers, even from the smallest role was outstanding on stage and everyone made it worth it. The block or movement on stage was done beautifully all of which flowed seamlessly, even when they were taking things off the stage. All of the performer’s voices made the characters stand out.

The set often changed. Some of the scenes were Matilda’s house, the school, Miss Honey’s house and the library. The lights and sounds made the performance standout more. Some sounds were recorded while others were live in the orchestra pit. The props really made you feel you were there in those places. The school uniforms were classic and old fashioned with a dull grey to them. The costumes made the characters standout more and add extra character to them. The costumes were made by Elizabeth Rogers.

Overall I think this musical was sensational. The design elements and performance transported you to a wondrous musical with arrays of emotions and wonderful scenes. I recommend this musical to anyone who likes Roald Dahl. I give this performance a thumbs up.

Launceston College’s Triumphant Matilda

Have you ever had the pleasure of reading the book Matilda? Written by Roald Dahl, this production didn’t fail to impress and it definitely hit the high notes. Launceston College’s imaginative take on Matilda left people inspired and dazzled.

Matilda’s family are brutal towards her. They call her dumb, weak and moronic. But when Matilda goes to school, she finds her biggest bully there, and it isn’t a child. Miss Trunchbull is the school principal and is unimaginably violent to every child in the school. Matilda learns to teach herself. When Matilda’s teacher, Miss Honey, discovers her deep intelligence, she fights for her and sticks by her side the whole way. Matilda learns an incredible story about Miss Honey’s history and also discovers that adults are not always right.

Lauren Colson did an outstanding job of playing the smart and funny Matilda. It was fascinating to watch as she sang and danced her way through the play. Lachlan Hindrum, Elise Kolka, Luca Schild, Georgia Woodland and Jordan Moss also did an amazing job playing Miss Trunchbull, Miss Honey, Mr Wormwood, Mrs Wormwood and Michael.

The lights and costume designs dazzled in their own way. The lights certainly added a magical touch, working together with the smoke machine. As Miss Trunchbull went to the Olympics with her hammer throwing, the logos on the uniforms were two hammers, crossed. The uniforms were bland, plain grey, the style of classic English uniforms. All of the design elements added a touch of glamor to the production.

Overall, the play was a legendary triumph for the audience and Launceston College. Everything about it positively shone and spoke positively for itself. There were very few mistakes, so it was obvious that Launceston College really put their heart and soul into their performance. Matilda takes you on a magical, enlightening and inspirational journey. If you want to witness magic, inspiration and a little bit of hilarity, I strongly encourage you to come and see Matilda today!

Launceston College’s amazing Matilda

Matilda, a small child with a big brain. Come and see Launceston College’s amazing take on Roald Dahl’s classic, Matilda.

We start with a birthday party scene; where you are surrounded in song. We then get moved to the scene where the main character; Matilda (Lauren Colson), is born through the beautiful song, Miracle. Although Matilda’s parents, played by Luca Schild and Georgia Woodland, did not care about their daughter, Matilda was determined to set things right, at home and at school with the dreaded bully Miss Trunchbull.

The costumes were amazing outstanding, imaging the classic English uniforms; perfectly dull and plain. A logo with two hammers, so clever by highlighting Miss Trunchbull’s Olympic hammer throwing skills. Matilda wears a grey patterned tunic with a complementary satchel and her hair all knotty. Her brother, on the other hand, has good quality clothes and is perfect for showing that there is an obvious favourite child in the family.

Everyone played their role extremely well, if someone made a mistake, you could hardly even see one because the actor/s would be creative and make it flow.

Matilda play review

On Wednesday august 21 grade 56 went to Launceston princess theatre to see a Matilda play performed by Launceston College.

It started with a lot of singing and dancing there were a lot of people on stage I liked this it was entertaining and a good way to start a show. The next scene showed Matildas mum pregnant with Matilda she wasn’t happy about being pregnant because she already had a child. After that you will meet Matilda’s family Jonathan, her brother, and her mum and dad and we all get a sense that the whole family hates her. Her dad always calls her a boy. The next Sean is Matilda going to school she meets miss honey her teacher she is very nice to all her kids, and Miss Trunchball her teacher she’s very very mean to all the kids

I think the design and costumes were good the costumes were simple but effective they defiantly could have done better with them. The background design was not vey good I felt like it was just out of place. But what they did with lights were very good and effective

I do encourage you to go see this play the acting is amazing, especially because there college kids the set was good the singing and instruments were really good and I think it’s worth your money.

In kinder we are continuing the use of the ELLA apps. We are learning about what we like to eat and what we don't like to eat.

In Prep/1 and 1/2 we are learning about adjectives and the word order in which they are used in simple sentences.

In 3/4 and 5/6 we are learning about 'kata kunci' (key words) and identifying key words within an Indonesian poem.

Last weekend I (Bu Ali) was lucky enough to attend some specific professional development for Indonesian teachers in Tasmania. We were guided by some fantastic Monash university lecturers and attempted some hands on learning, all in Indonesian. We heard guest speakers from the Indonesian Consulate in Melbourne and the Indonesian embassy in Canberra who gave us a positive outlook on the relations between Australia and our closest neighbours, Indonesia. We also attended a diplomatic reception where I met our Premier and chatted about the need for compulsory language programs in our schools in Tasmania to pull us in to line with other states such as W.A. and Victoria who have languages as a requirement in every school from prep through to year 12. It was a great learning experience and definitely inspired me to continue to grow. Sampai jumpa, Bu Ali.

The Whale (holding rubbish collected from keon trash pick ups) just needed a few final touches, so KEON members pointed out where they would like the found rope rubbish positioned - some showing the tangle that sea creatures find themselves in, and some defining the lines under the hump back’s chin.

The kids then got to work making plastic lid and shell threads to look like the sea, but also to show how the sea will have more plastic in it than fish by 2050 unless something is done. It was also a great opportunity to upcycle.

And then the whale was hung! What a fantastic night it was! Thank you to Kylie for having KEON involved and helping them to spread their message, to Mark for constructing the whale and to all the parents who helped along the way.
