From the Principal
Our Motto: Friendly Respectful Courageous Learning
Our Commitment: With courage we learn, connecting to people and place. Striving for excellence by being curious, creative and resilient.
As the end of term approaches I would like to thank: our hard working staff team for their professionalism and dedication to student learning and wellbeing; our amazing students who strive to their best every day learning in the classroom and who also continue to look after each other like extended family; and finally to our parents/guardians who provide such great support to their children and also to teachers in providing that crucial home-school partnership focussed on learning improvements within our strong school values environment.
This week the final ENE Country Gold trials are being held at St Mary’s and we are sure that all our students participating in the selections will be again giving their best to maximise their chances of selection. We really look forward to hearing the results of the selection process.
On Tuesday 30 July we will be holding out next Wilds’cool meeting with Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife staff. The purpose of this meeting will be to identify a plan around environmental projects that our students can be involved in. We will provide more information around this meeting in week 1 of Term 3.
Many thanks to Carl Noonan for his excellent work with our students around images that reflect our school and also, conceptual designs and ideas for our new school logo. This work is displayed both in the library and on the glass windows outside the Prep/1 and Grade 1/2 classrooms corridor. Please have a look when you get a chance as we move into the shortlisting phase and final design selection. As school community input to this process is essential, we aim to finalise this process early in Term 3.
Our school camp is fast approaching and parents of our Grade 3-6 students will receive paperwork to fill out and bring back by Friday. This will enable us to finalise numbers for the trip to Hagley Farm on 7-9th August. Please look out for warm gloves, beanies, jackets, thermals, waterproofed footwear, and scarves that can be bought, borrowed or recycled as keeping students warm will be an imperative, particularly the Grade 5/6 students who will have a day trip to Cradle Mountain on Thursday 8th August.
Just a reminder that on Monday 22 July is a pupil free day and all teaching staff and teaching assistants from St Mary’s, St Helen’s, Campbell Town, Winnaleah and Bicheno schools will be attending a professional learning focussed on a consistent Instructional Model across our schools. Students return to school for Term 3 on Tuesday 23 July.
Thanks everyone for a wonderful term 2 and we wish everyone a safe and happy holiday where everyone has a wonderful opportunity to catch up with family and friends!
Best regards
Rob Presswell
What’s happening in our classrooms?
Prep/One
Prep/One has been reading the book Magic Beach andwe looked at making connections to our own lives as a comprehension strategy.

Social/Emotional:
We are learning to keep our problems small and use our problem solving wheel.
Reading:
We are learning to chunk words in our reading.
Writing:
We are learning to use capital letters at the beginning of a sentence, for names of people and places and for the letter I.
Numeracy:
We are learning about positional language.
Science:
We are learning to understand how the weather affects everyday life. .
HASS:
We are learning about built, managed and natural features of our community.
Grade 1/2
In English, we are learning to accurately spell words with regular spelling patterns and words with less common long vowel patterns. For example, long vowels: ai/ay, oa/o_e, and ee/ea.
We are also learning to use punctuation accurately, and write words and sentences legibly using unjoined upper- and lower-case letters.
In Maths, we are learning to recognise increasing and decreasing number sequences. For example, we have been counting on and back in 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s from any starting point.
We are also learning to recognise patterns in number sequences, such as adding and subtracting 10 always results in the same final digit. (e.g. 74, 84, 94, 104, 114 …)
In Science, we are learning about mixtures in our chemical sciences unit All mixed up. We are learning about materials that don’t mix well, and others that are difficult to separate.
Grade 3/4
English: We are learning to identify homophones and understand how they sound the same but can be spelt differently and mean different things.
Maths: We are learning to make 3 Dimensional shapes and identify lines of symmetry within them.
Grade 5/6
Grade 5/6 recently travelled to Hobart to visit Parliament house where they learnt about the building’s history and consolidated their learning on Australia’s system of law making.
Three levels of Government in Australia
In Hass, the 5/6s have been learning about the levels of Government in Australia. We explored the levels of Government and the people and places involved with them. In our projects, we had to include something visual. Most people chose pictures but some did drawings too. We then had to display our research in our own creative way, such as a poster, PowerPoint or diorama. These are our finished presentations.
