From the Principal
Our Motto: Friendly Respectful Courageous Learning
Our Commitment: With courage we learn, connecting to people and place. Striving for excellence by being curious, creative and resilient.
Our 2019 School Improvement Plan is now displayed around the school with our key focus areas being:
- Improve student learning by ensuring that evidence based, high impact teacher strategies are consistently used in all classrooms, in all 3 schools.
- Build leadership and staff capacity to continually sustain and improve effective practice through ongoing collaboration.
- Assess and evaluate the critical features of school-wide effective behaviour using a School-wide Evaluation Tool (SET)
- Develop a Respectful Student Behaviour and Wellbeing policy for our school.
For more detail around our 2019 School improvement Plan our school community members can get a copy from the front office.
As one of our key values is respect. Our school leaders are preparing to represent our school at the RSL ANZAC Day ceremony in Bicheno on the 25th April. All school community members are welcome to be a part of this march, Students will need to be in full school uniform if they wish to march with the school behind the banner. Jen Sliskovic will attend as the staff member. As this falls during the holiday period parents will need to be responsible for their children as it is not a school organised event.
If you are interested in being involved please meet at the IGA corner on Burgess St at 10.45 am 25 April 2018.
Congratulations to all of our swift and strong students who ran at the Miners’ regional athletics carnival. We had 15 students selected to be part of the Miners’ team: including Ashar, Millie, Sylvie, Isla, Petra, Stephen, Forest, Arielle, Jye, Ruby, Hallie, Connor, Byron B, Grace B and Ned. Unfortunately, I missed the event as I had a Principals’ briefing in Launceston but from all accounts our students were absolutely courageous with congratulations going to seven students selected for the State Athletics Carnival on the 10th May:
- Stephen (Gr 5 boys) Long jump, 200 m & 100 m
- Forest (Gr 5 boys) 1500 m & 800 m
- Ruby (Gr 6 girls) 1500 m & 800 m
- Byron (Gr 6 boys) 100 m
- Hallie (Gr 6 girls) 100 m & shot put
- Isla (Gr 4 girls) Long jump
- Arielle (Gr 5 girls) Shot put
What an achievement and opportunity for these students!
Anthony Hill’s Plastic Pollution Solutions workshops at Bicheno PS were a great success. This would not have occurred without generous sponsorship including: Glamorgan Spring Bay Council (thanks Cynthia), the Bicheno Community Development Association, the Community Bank, and EON. Our KEON students were so inspired that we had 16 students and about 10 adults conduct a 2 hour clean-up of the Lions Park and Waub’s Bay beach areas on the weekend. Our students really care about our coastal environment but were also puzzled why so many people throw away cans, bottles, broken glass, cigarette butts, soft plastics and hard plastics. Congratulations to all those involved and particularly the Earth Ocean Network for coordinating the clean-up! You can read the KEON report in this newsletter.
Just a reminder around our NAPLAN students our Grade 3 and Grade 5 students will sit the online NAPLAN tests 14th – 24th May. Grade 3 to Grade 6 students will have the opportunity to sit a practice test in week 1 of next term. This helps students to get used to the online environment being used this year for the first time, and also to show the students the importance of relaxing and just trying to do their best. Another key message to our students is how teachers use this information to celebrate what students know and also to reteach areas where they need support.
Next term as a Wilds’cool we start our partnership with Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife. There will be a meeting early next term to meet with volunteer educators, school representatives and three Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife staff – exciting times are ahead!
Finally, I would like to thank students, parents, staff and the broader community for your hard work and wonderful support in what has been a very successful start to the 2019 school year! I wish everyone a fun and relaxed holiday with your families and friends!
Best regards
Rob Presswell
What’s happening in our classrooms?
Grade 1/2
On Tuesday 22 April, Anthony Hill from Plastic Pollution Solutions spoke to the Grade 2 to 6 students about the use of plastics and the environment.
His main message about the use of plastics was
- Refuse
- Reduce
- Re-use
- Recycle
The ocean is 2/3 of our world. We need to reduce the amount of plastic ending up in the ocean.
Grade 2 students have written and drawn something they learnt from Anthony’s talk.

Student Leader Speeches
Why I want to be a leader by Connor Baldwin
Hi my name is Connor here are some reasons why I want to be a leader.
I will help you with any problems you have at school and work with you to learn. I’m very friendly, respectful and very courageous and from my first day at Bicheno primary school I said I want to be a leader.
At the GRIP leadership conference in Launceston I learned the four core features of being a leader. They are confidence with humility, others focused, reliability and empathy. I’m working on my reliability and I will demonstrate our school values and help make our school and Bicheno better.
Leader Commitment Speech by Hallie Thompson
Hi my name is Hallie. I am excited to become a leader and look forward to all the opportunities that come my way.
I am passionate about sports and helping others to be the best they can be. The GRIP leadership conference was a great opportunity and helped my confidence. It also gave me lots of great advice in becoming a strong leader.
I look forward to doing more fun things like GRIP and becoming confident at public speaking. I believe in the school values: friendly, respectful, courageous, learners and I believe that if we all follow these values our school will be a better place.
I will work with others to support and help all students at the school, and will hopefully pass onto them, my ideas and support. I am proud to go to Bicheno Primary and look forward to being a part of everything grade six has to offer.
Leader Commitment Speech by Sienna Patmore
My name is Sienna Patmore. And I’m very excited to be a leader. I am passionate about the wellbeing of our school and community. Some of my interests are music, Indonesian, playing with the younger kids, sports and our school. I demonstrate the values and I will try my very best to help and tend to your needs. I hope that I can contribute with my skills, knowledge, and friendship and be able to pass that down.
I believe that the values: Friendly, Respectful, Courageous, Learners, are key and if we all stand up for what we are passionate about l am certain that we can change the world for the better.
Recently the grade 6’s went to a GRIP Leadership course which taught me about the core character traits; Confidence with humility, others focused, Reliability and Empathy. And that as a leader I need to build my confidence. I also learnt how I can help fundraise and start school cultures. I would love to see more in: Keon, after school activities, sports and music and I will 100% support them.
In our school we value diversity, our environment, each other and those are some of the things I love about my school. I am so very proud of what we have done individually and as a school.
Thank you
Excited to be a leader by Polly Alexander
Hi my name is Polly.
I am excited to be a leader. If you need someone to talk to I can be that person and I will always try to help as much as I can.
As a leader I will contribute to all of our school by following the school values such as friendly, respectful, courageous and learner. I believe that if our school follows the school values it will be a much better school.
My goal as a leader is to get better at public speaking and to be more confident in myself. I am passionate about music and sports. Recently the grade sixes, Mr Presswell and Tarquinne went to Launceston for a leadership conference called G.R.I.P. It was a good chance for the grade sixes to know how to be a better leader. I learnt that as a leader, you have to have confidence in yourself, be reliable, be focused on others and have empathy towards others. I hope I can contribute to making a positive step to the future. Thankyou.

Hi my name is Ned and I would love to be a leader and I have been wanting to be for a long time I am passionate about football music and Indonesian and I like playing with the little kids and organising games with them. My goal being a leader is to set an example for the little kids and also to improve my public speaking.

I am proud of our school and grateful for what it has done for me. I am really excited to see what happens in the future.
THANKYOU
Leadership speech by Ruby Sparshott
Good afternoon students, parents and staff.
Leadership is about people, not position or power. The most important character traits of a leader are confidence with humility, focusing on others, reliability and empathy. I have confidence in every student in my school and will put others before myself. I embrace the needs of others, no matter how old they are. If they are in kinder or grade six, I will help them to the best of my ability. I am able to be relied upon and will show initiative and integrity, no matter who is around me. I am empathetic to everyone around me and will put myself in their position to assist with their needs. I will display the school values of Friendly, Respectful, Courageous Learners in every way I can. I am passionate about helping others become the best they can be by being there, alongside them every step of the way. My strengths are public speaking, music, sport and believing in myself and others. A leader knows the way, goes the way and shows the way. Thank you.

KEON report
Friday 5th April was KEON’s 1 year anniversary.
We thought back to why we joined up, including our concern for plastic pollution and wanting to do something about it and other things to help save the environment.
We talked about some plans for the year ahead like doing more rubbish pick-ups, what to do with rubbish, movies about the pollution, getting better at putting rubbish in the right bins and a KEON market. We also shared stories on reduce, refuse, reuse, recycle and nature experiences
On the 7th of April, KEON met up at the Lions Park, to do a rubbish pick-up at Waubs beach and at the Lions Park.
We also received metal engraved KEON water bottles as a present from EON.

Notice for parents: Asthma and Medical Plans in Winter
Have an Asthma Action Plan
Winter brings cold weather and keeps us inside where indoor triggers such as dust mites, pet allergens, smoke and viruses can worsen asthma symptoms. Cold, dry air may cause airways to tighten, making breathing more difficult.
Winter is also the season for colds and influenza. As many as 8 out of 10 asthma attacks in children and 4 out of 10 in adults are triggered by viral infections. All the more reason to have a written asthma action plan. If you do not have a written Asthma Action Plan please discuss this with your doctor next time you visit.
As with any other time of year, it is very important to keep your asthma under control. This includes having regular reviews with your doctor, taking the proper medication regularly as indicated on your Asthma Action Plan and avoiding your asthma triggers.
So please if your child has asthma and is on Asthma medication, please see your doctor about completing an Asthma plan and bringing it to school.

Can you help?
Swansea Fair
Levies for 2019
Levy invoices will be generated at the end of this week and will be posted to the family mailing address. Levies can be paid directly to the school office by cash, cheque or EFTPOS or can be direct deposited. The school is always willing to establish a payment plan to help families and payments (large or small) can be made as often as needed.
School levies form a vital part of funding your child’s education. At Bicheno Primary School the levy covers the cost of all your child’s stationery, school hat, excursions and a school camp for all students from grade 3-6. When families choose not to pay levies then the school may need to reduce the amount of opportunities and experiences that are offered to students. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding around the payment of levies.
