‘Friendly Respectful Courageous Learners’
It’s that exciting time of year where our school houses of Apsley and Denison are gearing up to our Athletics carnival next Monday 18 March on the oval. Congratulations to all the students who have been training and honing their skills on Monday and Thursday afternoons and thanks to all the adults who having given their time to enable this to occur. The program for the day is detailed in this newsletter and the School Association are preparing their wonderful food and drinks which will be available through our canteen. See you all there with either your Apsley red or Denison blue colours in full flight!
Following on from the GRIP Leadership Conference our Grade 6 students attended, our leaders have been preparing their speeches to present to our students and staff between 2.10 and 2.45 pm this Friday in the Grades 3-6 classroom area. Their speeches will outline what values and qualities they bring to our 2019 Student Leadership Council and also some of their ideas on how they would improve our school. Parents of grade 6 students are welcome to attend.
This Thursday morning we have the pleasure of having principals from St Helens’ and St Marys’ schools, our Middle Years Literacy Assistant Principal coordinator, Shireen Thomas and also Pamela Macklin Managing Director of Zbar Consulting working together to develop our planning around the implementation this program. This is such an exciting learning opportunity for us all in identifying effective strategies focussed on improving literacy outcomes across our schools.
Other exciting happenings in our school are:
- Parks and Wildlife are running a free whale rescue training session 9 am to 3 pm on Sunday 17th March in the Grade 3-6 class rooms at our school (please refer to the poster in this newsletter for more detail and who to contact to confirm attendance)
- On Friday 15th March Nick Foster from Launceston Church Grammar School will be running a session with AV googles and a also including a science challenge (he will also be available after school to meet with any parents who are interested in finding out more about Launceston Church Grammar School); and
- Next Thursday 21st of March at 5 pm the School Association has their Annual General Meeting. This is a great opportunity for all parents to come along and be a voice in our school community around supporting our students and ideas for school improvement.
Our commitment:
With courage we learn, connecting to people and place. Striving for excellence by being curious, creative and resilient.
Have a wonderful week!

What’s happening in our classrooms?
Grade 1/2
In English, we are learning to create short imaginative, informative and persuasive texts. The first text type we are learning is recount writing which is retelling an event or an experience.
In Maths:
Grade 1s are learning to:
- tell time to the half-hour
- describe duration using months, weeks, days and hours
Grade 2s are learning to:
- tell time to the quarter-hour, using the language of 'past' and 'to’
- name and order months and seasons
- use a calendar to identify the date and determine the number of days in each month
In Science, we are learning about mixtures.
Grade 5/6
Over the last two weeks Grade 5/6 have been learning about the “us” sound at the end of words such as joyous and notorious. We have been learning about the structural and grammatical features of an exposition, and have been looking at how to make our persuasive writing more sophisticated.
In maths we have been learning to multiply and divide decimal numbers by 10, 100 and 1000 and by multiples of the same (e.g. 20, 200, 2000).
In science we have researched an animal of our choice and have written and information report on the structural and behavioural adaptations of the animal.
Indonesian
Kinder are creating their avatars for the beginning of the ELLA program (Early learning languages Australia).
Prep/1 and 1/2 are learning the Indonesian greetings for different times of the day.
Selamat pagi/ Good morning
Selamat siang/Good day
Selamat sore/ Good afternoon, evening.
Selamat malam/ Good night.
Grades 3 to 6 are discussing the different charities in Indonesia that they could raise money for with guidance from the school association. We are also beginning a digital learning extension program in the 5/6 class and attempting some online learning activities in the 3/4 class.
