From the Principal
A highlight of the year to date for me was attending the GRIP Leadership Conference in Launceston last week with our grade 6 students. Their contributions to the conference and behaviour as ambassadors of our school was exemplary. What was really powerful was to see them self-reflecting and understanding the importance of developing themselves to lead through CORE character traits of leader i.e. having confidence with humility, being others focussed; reliability, and having empathy.
Approximately 400 students attended and the program focussed around the following key themes:
- Developing myself to lead;
- Making a difference to my team;
- Making a difference to my school; and
- Making a difference to society.
Our students learnt a lot about the key aspects of leadership, the crucial importance of strong teams and where their own personal areas for development were. They also started thinking about how we make a difference to ourselves, our school and working with the broader Bicheno community through practical examples that other school leaders have achieved.
In our initial discussions some of the areas our students identified where they can take a leadership role were:
- Being active in the Kids Earth Ocean Network
- If successful with our WildS’Cool application developing a leadership partnership with Tasmania Parks and Wildlife
- Developing a kitchen garden bed at the front of the school
- Organising assemblies
- Creating end-of-term fun days for students.
- Planting native plants
- Investigating fund raising for a round swing that they played on in Campbelltown Park
Other exciting leadership news is that our School Association had a highly successful and productive meeting last Monday. Last week we shared our school values in our newsletter and we now have our school motto and commitment statement finalised which will shape our strategic planning development and school signage upgrade this year.
As our students and broader school community all know and aspire to our values it was agreed to encapsulate our values in our Motto of ‘Friendly Respectful Courageous Learners’.
Our Commitment incorporates two key statements around courage, connection and high expectations:
With courage we learn, connecting to people and place. Striving for excellence by being curious, creative and resilient.
Finally I would like to thank our students, our Grade 6 leaders, staff and the School Association for their dedication to school improvement focussed on improving every students learning!

Part 2 of the shade structure work has begun
The installation of the mound for our new turf installation began last week. The turf jas been installed this week.
We are hoping that the shade sail will be installed by mid-March.
Keep watching as our school grounds continue to develop.

What’s happening in our classrooms?
Grade 5/6
In Grade 5/6 we have been learning about developing a Growth Mindset as opposed to a Fixed mindset.
In English we have been learning about the “mumbled vowel”; the schwa. We have been looking at the idioms, slang and colloquial language used in Australia around the time of the first world war in our class Novel; Loyal Creatures by Morris Gleitzman.
In Maths we have been learning about decimal place value, and how to present very large numbers so they are easier to read.
In Science we have been learning about the difference between structural and behavioural adaptions of organisms.
BICHENO PRIMARY SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
Have your say & be involved
There are a number of ways you can be involved in the Bicheno Primary School Association:
- Become a committee member – nomination forms are available at the front office or print from our Facebook page
- Come along to meetings to share your views on agenda items
- Add a suggestion, idea or issue to the BPSA spreadsheet at the front office
The BPSA community spreadsheet is a new initiative for 2019 designed to make it easier for all members of our community to add agenda items to our meetings. Stay tuned to our Facebook page where a pinned post will explain more about this process. Prior to each BPSA committee meeting we will add the items to our agenda. After each meeting we will display an updated copy of the spreadsheet with the outcomes from the meeting in our notice board.
BPSA Noticeboard
The BPSA noticeboard is available for members of the school community to display appropriate community news. The key is kept with Sandra in the office. Please feel free to make use of the notice board as it conveniently located where the parents wait for school pick up.
Canteen
I hope everyone’s children enjoyed their first canteen of 2019. Thank you to the volunteers who made this possible. The next canteen is scheduled for 7 March, please let us know if you are available to count orders on Wednesday morning 8.45-9.45am or make the lunch orders on Thursday 11am – 1pm. A working with vulnerable people card is required.

Uniform changes
The parent and student community have overwhelmingly voted for this polo shirt to be our preferred uniform option with the existing logo embroidered in light blue.
The school are now investigating the cost for the new top and a working group from the School Association are investigating winter dress options for our students.
More information and consultation will follow.
