From the Principal
Welcome back everyone to a very exciting 2019 school year at Bicheno Primary School. For our new and vibrant Kindy students, new Primary students and our families we welcome you all to our wonderful school and as part of the broader Bicheno community. It was such a pleasure watching our students come in on the first day very excited to be catching up with their friends and our staff. They have settled into their classrooms quickly with all teachers being very impressed with their focus on learning. Our students have certainly been excellent role models of our school values this year.
As part of welcoming everyone back to our school year the School Association are organising a ‘meet and greet’ on Thursday 14 February from 2.45 to 4 pm. This is a great sharing opportunity and will enable:
- Students to share their classroom/s with family between 2.45 to 3.15;
- Meeting up with other families;
- Share in a sausage sizzle under the shade structure in the Kindy playground; and
- Clarify questions with the School Association members, staff and the Principal in a friendly and informal setting.
This year we welcome the following teaching staff to our school:
- Sam Kelly to the Grade 3/4 class and the PE role;
- Bronti Cooke to the Prep/1 class on Mondays to Thursday;
- Bruce Campbell as 0.5 teacher on Grade 1/2, Jen Sliskovic will be the other o.5 teacher on this class in a week about cycle (Thursday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday).
We also welcome Victoria (Tori) Harrison who has commenced in the Middle Years Literacy Project Coordinator role based out of St Helen’s working across our three schools: Bicheno Primary, St Mary’s District School and St Helen’s District High School. This is a very exciting opportunity to improve literacy outcomes across our 3 schools, with a particular focus on reading. We will be sharing our progress through the year and also be running Reading professional learning sessions with staff and relief teachers who work at Bicheno Primary.
A couple of reminders around enhancing communication and student engagement:
- As we have an open door policy for parents of our students please don’t hesitate to make an appointment with teachers or myself if you have any concerns;
- If your child/ren are away from school please contact the front office to let us know;
- If your child/ren are sick for more than a day please organise a medical certificate for our school records;
- Our School Association members are always available if you have any questions or concerns with the school; and
- Contact Sandra Silberberg to ensure you can access SchoolZine for access to our newsletters and important messages.
I hope everyone has a wonderful week enjoying the superb weather and surf at this time of year!
Rob Presswell
Kinder’s First Day
Kinder student enjoyed their first day last Thursday, learning all about their new classmates. Let us introduce the new Kinder class of 2019. Unfortunately Jasmin was away and couldn’t be with us.

Prep/One Self Portraits

Grade 1/2
In Mathematics we are studying Strand, Number and Place. We are learning to divide collections and shapes into halves, quarters and eigths.
In Grade 1 /2 we have been making artworks in different forms to express our ideas, observations and imagination. We only used two colours and reflected on a piece of music and interpreted this with paint. Here are some of our interpretations:

Grade 3/4
In Literacy we are exploring narrative texts and what elements they need in order to make sense. We will familiarise ourselves with the narrative text structure and use a graphic organiser to plan our own narrative.
In Numeracy we are exploring and refreshing ourselves with place value. We will use number lines to represent 4 digit numbers on appropriate scales.
Grade 5/6
From the Office
Student Validation Reports
Every year students take home DoE reports which details the information the Department of Education holds about your child; where they live, their Medical Conditions, Emergency Contacts and what Permissions you allow (media interviews, local excursions and the like)
These reports will be going home today and we ask that you correct any mistakes or change important information such as Emergency Contacts and their phone numbers. We would ask that every child has at least 2 emergency contacts, preferably including someone who is not just mum or dad.
The Permissions part of the form MUST be signed and completed every year.
Completed reports can be returned to the office.
Thank You
Sandra
Shade structure
Thanks to the generous donation of the School Association from 2018, the new shade structure (near the flagpoles) will be partly installed this Thusday. The installation has been delayed due to circumstances beyond the schools control. We would ask students and families to move quickly through this area during the installation. A seating area will be constructed under the shade structure in the following weeks.
If you have any questions please contact the school office.
Using Schoolzine and the SZApp – Your action is required!
Please make sure you are still getting push notifications and that you have subscribed to the correct “Contact Group”, particularly if your child has moved classes this year. If you aren’t subscribed to the correct group, you may miss out on information, notices and notifications which are relevant to your child and things that are happening for them at school.
School Association Update
Term 1 welcome BBQ
14 Feb 2019, 2.45pm
We invite everyone to our Term 1 meet & greet BBQ. Please come along and enjoy the chance to meet new parents and students. It’s also a good time to chat to the School Association members or our Principal, Mr Presswell, in an informal setting.
School uniform polo t-shirts
Discussions have begun around the possibility of changing the school polo t-shirt. Our Kinder students are currently wearing one of the options being considered, option3.
Light and dark blue would remain our colours, however, the darker colour would be the primary colour with light blue as the accents. A reversal of colours should help to keep the t-shirts looking clean and neater for longer.
Which style design do you prefer? This is just the style. The light blue would form the striping and the dark blue would be on the body. Vote at the poll on our Bicheno Primary School Association facebook page, or if you don’t have access to facebook please speak to a committee member about your preferred option.

Option1, Option2, Option3

Launching into Learning
Indonesian
Prep/1 and 1/2 classes are learning how to ask and answer the question, 'What is your name?'
Siapa namamu? (What is your name?)
Nama saya......(My name is....)
Senang bertemu (Happy to meet you)
Year 3/4 and 5/6 will be reading Indonesian texts and translating them. We will be building on our vocabulary as we discover new words within these authentic texts. We will be comparing Indonesian language and culture with our own.
