From the Principal
As the term draws near I would like to acknowledge our whole school community for such a highly successful start to 2018. We are very fortunate to have students, staff and parents who model our school values of friendly, respectful and courageous learners. I would also like to thank everyone for making my first year at Bicheno Primary School such a wonderful experience.
Another great example of these values were the students who represented the ENE in the state cross country championships. All students did their best with an outstanding result by Caleb Broughan placing 3rd in the 12 years old boys 3km race. Caleb has qualified for the National Championships held later in the year. A truly outstanding effort
For the last two weeks our Grade 5/6 students have been travelling up to St Mary’s District School participating in Science lessons in the laboratory classroom. Students have been excited to learn about light and its properties in the first week and last week about electrical currents and how we control electric currents and which materials are conductors.
Our partnership with the Bicheno Community and Men’s Shed is resulting in our recycling stations' timber structures. It’s exciting to see the structures taking shape and the students involved have been learning new skills through this great initiative sponsored by the Bendigo Bank.
In terms three and four we will be building our 2019 School Improvement Plan and also will continue to work with St Helen’s District High School and St Mary’s District School around building our strategic collaboration, emerging leaders and resource sharing as we move towards building our alliance around East Coast Schools of Excellence.
This week is a busy one and teachers have enjoyed sharing your child’s/children’s progress in terms one and two! We welcome parents into our classrooms to discuss student learning at any time.
I hope everyone has a safe, relaxing and special family time during the holidays and we look forward to seeing all the students back at school on Tuesday 24 July 2018!
Kinder: When I Grow Up
Kinders have read Tim Minchin’s book “When I Grow Up” based on his song written for the musical, “Matilda”. It focuses on what life could be from the view point of a child. After reading this book, Kinder started to think of all the things they wanted to be when they grow up. We thought about not only what they wanted to be, but how. Please read the beautiful comments from the Kinders, thinking about what their lives could be when they grow up.

Grade 3/4 Excursion
Antarctic Division & T.M.A.G.
On Friday the 22nd of June Grade 3/4 went to Hobart to the Antarctic Division and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery by bus. First we went to the Antarctic Division and met Dr Glen Johnstone. We learnt about what people wear down there and wore some of their clothes. Then we went into his lab where we saw where they keep the krill frozen. CSIRO are the first people to successfully breed krill. We saw some of the creatures that live in Antarctica like sea spiders and giant isopods. After we went in the freezer, it was -21 degrees.
Then we left to go to the T.M.A.G. and met Richard. We saw some of the art work then we looked at the Antarctic things. I learnt that fresh water freezes below 0 degrees but the salt water around Antarctica has to be below 2 degrees. We had a challenge to see who could keep their hand on an ice block the longest.
Mikayla and I saw a massive cauldron which was used to make whale oil after whaling. Richard told us some things about the animals in Antarctica compared to the other ones on earth. I got asked to take about 33 big steps which is about 33 meters. I only got up to 21 meters until the wall but a blue whale is about 33 meters. We did this because krill are crucial to the Antarctic environment and an animal that eats krill are whales and the biggest whale is the blue whale and that’s about how big they get. Then we passed some things around like seal shoulder blades, seal skulls, whale baleen, whale back bones and stuffed teddies then we went back to school.
In conclusion, my favourite part was when we got to try on the Antarctic clothes. I’m happy that we’re not there anymore and that no more information is flowing into my brain but I miss the place because I learnt so many new and wonderful things there.

My class Excursion
On Friday the 22nd of June, my class and I went to a class excursion at Hobart. First we went the Antarctic Division our guide was Doctor Glenn Johnson, he’s been down to Antarctica. We first went to have a look at the pictures of Antarctica and had a look at the gear they used there. They used a lot of gear, then we had a talk with Doctor Glenn Johnson we talked about how the ice breaks in Antarctica, the weather there and the ships they used to get down there. After we finished talking about Antarctica we got to wear some of the gear and I got to wear their jackets, boots, gloves and some goggles they used to protect their eyes. Then after we got to go inside the freezer room it was -21 degrees. It was cold and windy, then we went to the lab where Doctor Glenn Johnson worked at we saw some weird things inside the room, we got to have a look at the krill eggs through the microscopes. They were so small you would not see a thing if you didn’t it use a microscope. Then after that we went back to the bus and headed to the Museum and Art Gallery.
Our tour guide was Richard and he was nice. We first went to have a look at the things they made years ago. Richard then took us to have a look at the Antarctic Gallery and it was really fun because we got to have a challenge, it was who could put their hands in the ice the longest I was close to winning. After we had a look at the early explorers who have been to Antarctica. I found the scientist I was researching; Robert Falcon Scott. Then Molly told me to come and watch the 3D Antarctica movie, it was very interesting then after we all came together and had a look at the things that were inside the whale’s body, we saw the whale’s back bone and the whale’s bailing and the seals skull. So then Tarkyn got to be a penguin, he looked funny. Next I got to be a wondering albatross. I was happy because I at least got to be an albatross then we said a big thankyou to Richard for showing us around. I loved my excursion because I learned a lot of things and my favourite part was when I got to be a wondering albatross.

Antarctic Excursion
This piece of writing is about grade 3/4 excursion in Hobart.3/4 went to the Antarctic Division and Tasmanian Museum and art gallery.
I learnt that even bacteria freezes at -100oC!! We had a look at some of the animals that live in Antarctica. Some of the species are starfish, sea sponges, sea spiders and krill and other animals. The person that showed us around was called Dr Glen Johnson.
I felt sick because it was a long time on the bus but I still felt excited.
After that 3/4 went to the museum and art gallery. We had a tour guide called Richard. He talked to us outside about how the carpark used to be all water and aborigines lived all around the Hobart area.
Then we went inside it was amazing. There was this piece of artwork. It was a helicopter with a city inside it. The story of artwork was it would fly around and carry it around all night. After that we went to the Antarctica room. There was an area were an ice block were you put your hands on, it was freezing. There were a part that we all sat down and Richard got something out like baleen, sperm whales teeth. Finally we went back to school.
I think that it was a great experience for us all.

Antarctic Division
On Friday the 22nd of June my class went on an excursion to the Antarctic Division and we got to put some of the clothes that they wear in Antarctica and they were so warm I nearly melted to the ground! When I went to the Antarctic Division with my class I was amazed because it was really big and we got to have a look at a room and it had jars with sea creatures and there were so many. I was looking side to side and then we went to the freezer and some people said it was cold but I took my jumper off.
Then we went to the museum and we had a competition who could put their hands on the ice the longest. My friend won, his name is Forest. At the art gallery we had a look around and it was so cool, I was amazed because of how much stuff there was, it was really crowded. At the Museum and Art Gallery there was lots of stuff that involved Antarctica and we sat in a circle and we were talking about Antarctica and we were looking at sea creatures and there was a krill puppet and there was a whale puppet and a whale back bone as well. There was also ice and a 3D cinema.
I liked the excursion because we got to do lots of things and had to work out things. My favourite part was doing the competition and going in to the 3D cinema.

My Excursion to Hobart
On Friday the 22nd of June Grade 3/4 went to the Australian Antarctic Division and Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart.
First, we went to the Antarctic Division to see Dr Glen Johnstone the scientist. We went inside to the information area and saw information about Antarctica and the boats that went down there. After that we went to a room that was full of clothes that you could put on.
Glen told us how cold it was down in Antarctica, there at the time we were there it was -8.8c. Second, we went to the labs to see where he worked. When we got down there Glen took us to the freezer room it was -21c. We all got a turn going in, some people thought it was cold and others didn’t. Then we went to the lab where Glen worked. We got to see all the animals that lived down there.
After that we got to see some krill eggs. They were so small. Soon after we went to the T.M.A.G. When we got there we met our tour guide Richard and we went in. First we went to the main room, it had activities there and more. When we were there Richard took us in a black room, in the room there was a stuffed tiger and lots of little statues and architecture.
Then we went to the next story. This had my favourite room. It had a lot of rooms in it. We went in the Antarctic room in there. There was a picture of Antarctica and we talked about the places there. We saw a block of ice and we saw who could put their hand on it for the longest. After that we had ten minutes to look around and see stuff.
After the ten minutes Richard took us to a room to listen to some facts about Antarctica. We got to hold puppets, a seal skull and more. Then we went back home.
My favourite part was when we had a competition on the ice. The most exciting part was when we got to hold the puppets and all the other stuff. I liked it because all the cool things we got to do.

Antarctic Division
On the 22nd of June Grade 3/4 went to the Antarctic Division in Hobart. Doctor Glen Johnson was our tour guide. A group of 4 went in an ice room for around 10 seconds. We went in the lab and we looked though a microscope and saw a weird blob. In the Antarctic Division I particularly liked the lab because we got to look at krill eggs.
We went to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. We met a person called Richard. He showed us around the museum and art gallery and we found an ice block and had a competition to see who could hold their hand on it for the longest. Forest won. We got to have a look around - there was a 3D room and Byron pretended he was in the movie. There was an Antarctic room and there was a map we looked at. At the museum and art gallery I particularly liked the Antarctic room because of the 3D cinema. I loved the trip because I learnt things and heard of new creatures and I got to see what they looked like look at things that Tasmanians made.

Antarctic Trip
On Friday my class went to the Antarctic Division and a museum in Hobart. We went to the Antarctic division first. We got to go into the microscopic lab where there were jars with Antarctic sea creatures lined up on the table. We got to dress up in the clothes that people wear in Antarctica. We walked outside of the building and the guide said that the Antarctic Division was the first place to breed krill.
After that we went to the museum and there was an ice block. You could touch it. I thought it was freezing. I found it interesting because I like science. There was a computer where the mouse was just a circle stuck in the bench. My favourite part was the ice block because I like playing with ice.

What’s happening in our classrooms?
Grade 1/2

We were working on properties of 2D shapes.
Grade 3/4
In Numeracy we are learning to identify important information in multi-stepped worded maths problems.
In Literacy we are learning about publishing our recount writing. Moving the piece of writing through each stage of the writing process – self-editing, peer-editing and publishing.
In HASS we are learning how to communicate our research findings, deciding the most appropriate method to demonstrate our understanding of Antarctic geography or history.
In Digital Technologies we have examined the internal hardware of a personal computer and compared it to the human body – the CPU is the brain of the computer. We are investigating algorithms to understand the importance of the correct order when following a set of sequenced instructions.
Grade 5/6
This term Grades 5/6 have been fortunate to work with some experts in their field. They have developed their drawing skills and learnt a range of techniques when using water colours with Vanessa Richardson. We have also travelled to St Marys District High School to work with Lab Technician Naomi Wilkinson and Science Teacher Tom Spykers were we have been learning about different types of energy; light, electricity and hydro (water).

Working with Vanessa
In Maths we have been learning about different types of data presentations and misleading data. We have been consolidating our understanding of subtraction and the process used in algorithms. In English we have been working on our independent writing projects. We have focused on the complications in our stories; by learning to consider the rise and fall of tension. We have done further work on varying our sentences by learning how to use semi-colons in place of a connective.
In Science we have been learning about Energy; particularly light and electricity and how energy is transferred or transformed. We have taken our learning to St Marys District High School to experience an authentic Science lab.

School Holiday: EON movie
Part surf film, part conservation film, Never Town takes a journey along some wild coastlines and talks with the people fighting to keep them wild. Filmed along the Southern Ocean coasts of Australia, it’s an exploration of what these places mean to surfers… and what surfers are willing to do to save them. As surfing elder Wayne Lynch says, “We mythologised these places. We lose them and we lose ourselves.” Never Town spans Australia’s vibrant southern fringe from the dusty edge of South Australia to the deep forests of Victoria and Tasmania. It features the surfing of Dave Rastovich, Dan Ross, Belinda Baggs and Heath Joske, set alongside conversations with coastal activists who are standing up against deepwater oil drilling and industrial fish farms. Midnight Oil, Yirrnga Yunupingu, Ziggy Alberts and Bad Dreems provide a distinctly Australian soundtrack. With coastlines around the world under pressure like never before from growing populations, rampant development and exploitation from resource companies, Never Town is a rallying call for surfers and local communities to stand together to protect the wild spaces around them.
