From the Principal

Last week saw all our Grade 3 and 5’s undertake National NAPLAN tests in Literacy and Numeracy. Although, this can be very stressful for students, particularly year 3 students who are not familiar with the very formal and rigid structure of the testing process, we can be proud that all students tried their hardest.

Well done to Mr Woolley and Mrs Bosua for preparing the students so well and for administering the tests in my absence. Also, thank you also to the parents and support staff who also assisted our students during the testing. Congratulations most of all should go to the students who were courageous and showing respectful learning by giving their best in the tests and showing resilience when they faced difficult questions.

The school community will be informed of our overall results in due course. These results will help teachers address needs in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy as a whole school.

Our school cross country is quickly coming up, being planned for next Thursday 31 May. If you can assist us with being a helper (being a marshal on the course) please see myself know or let the school office know.

It is pleasing to see so many parents using the SZApp on their phones; as the online newsletter, calendar and SZApp are being our main means of mass communicating with parents. If you haven’t already done so, please download the SZApp onto your phone. If you aren’t sure of what to do or how the App works please call in and see Sandra in the school office.

Finally, congratulations to all students who competed in the State Athletics Carnival last Friday. From all accounts everyone performed well with some outstanding individual results including Stephen Omenka who came second iny hr 100 and 200m events and 4th in the Long Jump and Shae Lord who also came 4th in the Shot Put.

Have a great week and stay warm!

Grade 3/4: Kitchen group

"Students have been connecting their learning to the real world". Last term we were discussing what was in our lunch boxes and the idea grew from there. As a class we discussed some homemade favourite options to put in our boxes for recess. We then had to research some recipes, write out a list of ingredients and find out how much the recipe would make.

A trip to the IGA was needed to buy the ingredients, working out how much money was needed and how much change we should get back. The next step was to head to the kitchen and apply our knowledge of measurement to create some yummy treats for the whole class.

Links to literacy include the use of various text types: recount/retell stories of home recipes. Procedural text were used in the form of recipes and the development of oral language when conversing with the counter attendant at the supermarket. Numerous mathematical concepts were put into action, such as measurements, money, doubling facts, time management. We also learnt important 21st century skills like collaboration, cooperation, problem solving, creativity, leadership, initiative and how to leave a nice, clean kitchen ready for the next group (good ol' fashion manners). Thanks to Hanna and Victoria for making this possible. Keep an eye out in the canteen for our next kitchen creations.

My Farm – mistake from last edition.

As I slipped the cold, smooth, new CD into my computer, a beautiful, green farm appeared. Paddocks of horses, cows and goats. Fields of trees, shrubs, fruit and veggies lighting up my eyes. Then words, hundreds of words layered the fields and paddocks guiding the way. I settled down in my pillowed desk chair, grabbed the mouse and pressed start.

KEON

“When we met for our first official meeting last term, there was about 20 kids. We read a book about a bird who saved animals – the message was how humans have left so much rubbish that the animals are dying.

We had lots of ideas about what we could use instead of plastic and how we should start doing things to help clean up our environment.

Some of the ideas include: -

  • Replacing or not using plastic straws
  • Refuse plastic bags or using reusable bags

We talked about doing a poster and putting them up around town to explain why it’s important not to litter.

We talked about what it means to “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”.

The last thing that we mentioned was designing a logo for KEON.

We will keep on giving everyone updates of what KEON has been up to and how you can help.

KEON “Rubbish Hit Squad” Report

By Nina Stevens

We have had 4 rubbish pic-ups so far. The first was at Lenny’s Point, then Waubs, Seymour and Redbill. We found a lot of stuff, including an old chair and an old cushion and it was really fun.

First pick-up day at Lenny’s Point. Big thumbs down to rubbish

A quick swim before a big rubbish pick-up at Waubs.

The KEON team at Redbill With some interesting finds

What’s happening in our classrooms?

Prep/1

English

Reading fairy tales and recognising the different language features and how stories are developed.

Grade1’s – The 'bossy e' rule: when an e comes at the end of a word it tells the vowel to make a long sound e.g. kit to kite.

Preps – revising letter sounds and learning about the e, u and r sounds.

Maths

  • Telling the time to the half-hour
  • Revising ten facts

Science

Making predictions and observing changes in science investigations and recording the results.

In Art we interpreted the book “Magic Beach” by Alison Lester to create these crayon and wash paintings.

Our Magic Beach paintings

Grade 1/2

In English we are learning about opinion writing.

In Maths we are learning number bonds or ways to make numbers by breaking them in to two or more parts.

In Science we have started a unit on Light and Sound.

Our Social Focus has been exploring what activities make us feel calm or relaxed. We have been wearing a ‘magic dot’ (similar to a mood ring) to monitor how we are feeling and taking notice of what activities we were doing when our dot changed colour. When we listened to a story the whole class’s dot changed colour!

Grade 3/4

In Literacy we are learning how to effectively edit both our own writing and helping others edit theirs. We are learning how to use adjectives and adverbs to make our narratives more interesting.

In Numeracy we are learning different methods of multiplying 2 digit numbers. We found if we make the numbers smaller, it becomes a lot easier to work out.

In Science we are continuing to look at life cycles and food webs in Antarctica. We are also investigating the characteristics of living and non-living things. One inquiry question were are researching is about fire and how it shares many of the characteristics of living things.

In HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) we are learning about early Antarctic explorers. We currently have an ‘ice box’ from the TMAG, full of objects actually from past expeditions down to Antarctica.

Our Social focus this week is to respect other people’s space and property.

Grade 5/6

In the last two weeks, (in addition to the Grade5’s sitting NAPLAN) Grade 5/6 have been learning a range of mental strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems.

We have been learning about different types of poetry and the language features and poetic devices used by authors.

We have been developing our skills in public speaking through presenting our HASS projects on the Commonwealth Games and reciting poetry.

In art we have learnt some different techniques for creating art using water colours with Vanessa.

Indonesian

In kinder we are continuing with the ELLA program.

In Prep/1 and 1/2 we are talking about Ramadan and the words for eating and drinking (Minum dan makan).

In 3/4 we are asking and answering how many objects there are (Ada berapa?).

In 5/6 we are learning how to ask what the time is and provide an answer (Jam berapa sekarang?).
