From the Principal
We can all be very proud of the following students who stepped outside of their comfort zone and collected 160 surveys for the organising committee at the Bicheno Festival: Natarlie Webb, Grace Briggs, Alice Woolfe, Shae Lord, Stephen Omenka, Kyia-Lea Ham, Ned Woolfe, Luke Whelan, Aston Pasini, and Ruby Sparshott. Many people who were surveyed commented on how well our students were presented and how well-mannered and well-spoken they were. What fantastic role models for our school! Also, special thanks to the parents and school community members that kept an eye on them in such a public forum. Our next step is for these students to collate this data and produce a report for the organising committee as part of our ‘real life learning’ project. On behalf of the school community we also congratulate the organising committee for putting on such a wonderful and highly successful event!
On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week our Grade Six students are involved in the transition program to St Mary’s District School. We certainly wish them well (and also students who are enrolling at other High Schools in Launceston) in this important part of understanding what their school expectations and learning programs will be in 2018.
This newsletter is the first of fortnightly newsletters available in an online format to phones and tablets. There many great features which include: parents being able to receive, complete and submit permission notes; deliver updates on events; and provide instant access to the schools events and important dates’ calendar. This is a 12 month trial and we will be seeking feedback from our school community around the features and also other information parents would like to have access to. Please be patient as we build the functionality of this online newsletter as it does take time to build and improve.
The next few weeks will be very busy as staff and students finalise assessments, re-teach concepts in priority areas identified through the assessment process, and prepare students for our end-of year concert. It is has been a great term to date with so many of our students being recognised for outstanding achievements! One of the outstanding aspects of our school is the family feel of the school and the wonderful support we get from parents and the broader to community in supporting our students learning. We have a great school full of inspired, creative, friendly, respectful learners!
I hope everyone has a highly successful week!

A fantastic effort from these student to be selected to represent our Association. We wish them all the very best.
Grade 5/6: Virtual Towns
We have been learning about the relationship between three dimensional objects and their 2D net.
Student Reflection
In a group we had to design a town, giving each member a building to build.
Each member then had to draw a 3D picture of their building and its net showing the dimensions. Next, we drew the net onto card and built our buildings. Finally we put our buildings together to create our town.
Other classes came and toured our towns. It was a really fun activity.
By Aston and Elise.

Important Safety Notice
We are beginning the “front of school” upgrade on Thursday 23 November. Wallaroo contracting will be on site from 7.00am to start with the asphalt removal.
As a result the following changes to student arrivals and student movements will be in place
- The James St pedestrian gate will be locked – NO ENTRY
- Students riding to school are asked to leave their bikes in the EC playground under the shade structure
- All Prep students/parents and staff will need to enter the main Administration building through the external music room door.
- The EC playground and Primary playgrounds will be out of bounds for the entire day. We ask parents to not use these playgrounds after school hours.
- Parents wishing to collect their children after school are asked to wait in the EC playground.
St Marys Arts on Tour
On Thursday 16 November, students from St Marys District School came to Bicheno to perform their adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. The show is performed by students, backed by a band of their own students. Students also made their own props and back drops. It was a highly entertaining production.
The Production visits several other schools along the East Coast and in Hobart.

Naplan Presentation
Congratulations to Georgie Featherstone who received her Certificate of Excellence from Jeremy Rockliff, Minister of Education.
Grade 5/6: Japanese Notan
Notan is a Japanese word meaning the balance between dark and light. It is also an art form involving papercutting to create positive and negative shapes/space. It is a Japanese design concept involving the play of light and dark, and having equal representation in a composition.
Grade 1/2 Illustrated Video.
Ms Pierce has been working with Grade 1/2 to illustrate a video book! They have been working on illustrations for “Story of the Moon as told by the first people of Bicheno” and spoken by Aunty Patsy Cameron. The illustrations have been sent away and we will include a link to the final video once it has been completed. Here are a few illustrations taken from the story which will be included in the book.
